Homer Bailey went for seven strong innings on Tuesday, September 20 to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Houston Astros 6-4 at the Great American Ball Park.
Francisco Cordero had his 34th save of the season as he was brought on to pitch the ninth inning.
The win for the Reds also put an end to their four-game losing streak as Brandon Phillips homer coupled with Dave Sappelt and Juan Francisco’s respective hits. Jay Bruce also managed to get three hits.
Budd Norris of the Astros gave up three runs with a 3.77 ERA in 2.2 innings while Lucas Harrell gave up two runs and two hits with a 2.00 ERA in his 1.1 inning spell. Wilton Lopez gave up three hits with a 2.93 ERA.
Devin Mesoraco homered to left against Budd Norris in the second inning to give the team an early 2-0 lead while Dave Sappelt was quick to score another single that tripled the lead for the Cincinnati Reds.
J. D. Martinez, however, came up with a two-run homer in the third inning against Homer Bailey to bring the lead down to 3-2 as the Astros looked for an opportunity to bank upon. The Reds, however, went aggressively against Lucas Harrell.
Jay Bruce hit a two-run single to help the Reds establish their dominant 5-2 lead in the game. Homer Bailey kept on with his fastballs with variation that rendered the Houston Astros’ hitters unable to go for any major hit.
It was the coming of Jose Arredondo on the mound that gave Chris Johnson of the Astros a chance to go against the Reds. Johnson scored a two-run homer to bring the lead down to 5-4, giving a distinct opportunity to overwhelm the Reds.
However, Brandon Phillips homered to centre against Abreu to take the lead to a comfortable 6-4 while Francisco Cordero unleashed his unplayable pitches to earn a 6-4 victory for the Cincinnati Reds against the almost resurgent Houston Astros.
The Reds put in a brilliant performance as they battled hard throughout the game and managed to get a much needed victory over the Astros.
