Cincinnati Reds defeat Milwaukee Brewers 9-5 in series opener – MLB Update

The Cincinnati Reds put in a good performance as they beat Milwaukee Brewers 9-5 at Miller Park on Monday, April 25 to take a 1-0 lead in the three game series.
Starting positively at both ends, the Reds’ catcher Ryan Hanigan led off the game in the second inning, adding an RBI single. It set the foundation for the batters and they took full advantage of it in the bottom of the third inning, as they posted six runs.
Jay Bruce started the inning with a splendid two-run homer to right field off the Brewers’ starter Chris Narveson. Brandon Phillips and Jonny Gomes then added an RBI single each to force the opposition to relieve starter Naverson with Brandon Kintzler. The
move did not work and the Reds’ Hanigan and Bronson Arroyo touched RBI singles each to take the lead 7-0 in the third.
The Reds’ starter Arroyo was going well until the fourth, but in the fifth he threw some wobbly pitches that provided the Brewers a chance to earn a RBI single. Despite throwing sloppy pitches in the sixth and seventh, Arroyo was fortunate to receive just
one more run, allowing a two run trim in the 7-0 lead. Viewing the decreasing speed of Arroyo, the Reds’ relieved him with Bill Bray.
It seemed as if the Brewers batters had awakened in the eighth, as Jonathan Lucroy chipped another RBI single off Bray. In the ninth, the Brewers’ bull-pen left all the hopes when the Reds’ second baseman Phillips scored an RBI double widening the lead to
9-3. However, left fielder Ryan Braun showed the light of hope, hitting a huge 425-feet long two-run homer. It was dying hope as the Brewers closer Jordan Smith took Prince Fielder on a fly ball.
Arroyo gave just two runs on six hits and allowed two walks while getting four strike-outs in six innings. He was happy to have such huge runs in the start of the game and regarded it as the power booster for the pitcher.
Arroyo said, "It's always fun to get that many runs early. It makes it that much easier for you to pitch it with less effort. I went out there in some of the middle innings and was just cutting a bunch of balls at 80 miles an hour just to preserve energy."
The Brewers are hoping for a come-back in the series on Tuesday. The club has scheduled their winning pitcher Marco Estrada to face off against the Reds’ Mike Leake.
