Cincinnati Reds defeat San Diego Padres 3-2 – MLB Update
The Cincinnati Reds put in a good performance as they defeated San Diego Padres 3-2 at Petco Park, San Diego on Monday, April 11.
Cincinnati made amends for Edinson Volquez’s worst possible start on Monday as he was taken to task by Orlando Hudson and Will Venable who capitalised on his mistakes and subsequently had two hits. The Reds’ starting pitcher has had difficulty performing
to the best of his ability owing to inexplicable reasons. However, the Reds sprang back into the game in the fifth inning with Ryan Ludwick and Brad Hawpe’s hit, levelling the score 2-all.
The game began with Mat Latos pitching for the Padres who faced Chris Heisey. Latos did not allow the Reds’ batters to open up and get a decent hit on him.
San Diego made a promising start by taking on Volquez. It was Ludwick who hit it by pitch, as Venable scored and Hudson moved to third while Chase Headley headed to second. Next came Brad Hawpe who hit a sacrifice fly to centre where Hudson scored the second
run for San Diego.
Playing on their home ground, San Diego then tried their level best to contain Cincinnati and maintain their own lead of 2-0. Latos came pitching in the second inning for the Padres and succeeded in doing that. Volquez who had struggled in the first inning
was better in the second and did not let any Padres’ batters score.
Cincinnati announced their return in the match in the fourth inning when Jonny Gomes homered to left on Latos’ fastball. That opened their account and reduced the lead of the Padres to 2-1. Volquez then did penance for his first inning blunder by not allowing
any batter of the Padres to go for a hit.
The Reds emerged as tough competitors in the fifth inning when Latos of San Diego was converted into a capital sum by none other than Chris Heisey who drove one out for his first home-run of the season. Paul Janish, prior to that, had drawn a one-out walk
from Latos with two outs.
Importantly, Latos had just returned after a considerable while partly because he was relegated to the disabled list. Although his first three innings had remained scoreless, Heisey finally got over him and scored a home-run.
That effectively heralded the Reds’ victory in the game as Ernesto Frieri and Francisco Cordero who came to replace Volquez for pitching did not permit the Padres’ batters to go for any massive hit or runs. The lead of 3-2 eventually translated into victory.
The Reds’ offence managed to effectively put runs on the board during the game. The Padres put in a decent performance, but it was not enough for a win.
