Cincinnati Reds defeat St. Louis Cardinals, 9-7 – MLB News
A collective effort from different batters of the Cincinnati Reds resulted in their club’s 9-7 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals at the Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, on May 15.
Pitchers from both sides were on top in the very first inning as they did not allow a single run to any batter. The Cardinals led-off with 2-0 in the second inning, when Lance Berkman hit a solo homer on contribution with Ryan Theriot, who singled-off the
left-field position. On the other hand, the Reds posted their first run during the third inning, when Ramon Hernandez hit a solo homer towards the centre-field spot. The score-card moved to 2-1 at the end of third inning.
Drew Stubbs drove for a single run, while Miguel Cairo walked on the loaded bases to contribute two runs for their team and the Reds went ahead 3-2, at the end of the fourth inning. The fifth inning went score-less for both teams. The Reds continued to extend
their lead, when Scott Rolen hit an RBI single to lift the scoreboard, 4-2.
The seventh inning again went in favour of the Reds as they scored four runs in it. Brandon Phillips hit a shot for bases-loaded double, Joey Votto walked and Jay Bruce had a two run double in their run-scoring campaign. The Reds got an 8-2 lead after the
seventh inning. Cardinals’ batters were unable to score any run from the third to eighth inning.
Phillips was satisfied with his game and said, “Like I've been telling everybody, everybody has their day. Today, we hit his mistakes and took advantage of situations. I love the way we're playing right now.”
Chris Heisey struck his fourth homer of the season in the eighth inning to give the Reds a lead of 9-2. The Cardinals added five runs in the last inning to cut-off their deficit to 9-7. Nick Punto and Theriot both hit double RBIs on contribution with Yadier
Molina, who singled towards the right-centre field.
Cardinals’ manager, Joe Pettini said, “They took offense to it, we took offense to it, and the soap opera continues between these guys. It's always something when you come in here.”
Chris Carpenter was shaky with the ball as he threw 6 1/2 innings and gave away eight runs on nine hits, including seven earned runs. He struck-out five batters and allowed one walk.
