Cincinnati Reds defeat the San Diego Padres 8-2 in the eleventh inning – MLB Update
Ryan Hanigan added a go-ahead double and Drew Stubbs launched a huge three-run homer to centre-field as the National League’s Cincinnati Reds, won an exciting game 8-2 in the eleventh inning, over league rivals San Diego Padres on Wednesday at Petco Park
in California.
With the game entering into the eleventh for 2-2, Hanigan landed at the plate and smashed a line drive helping Jonny Gomes earn a leading score. The single turned the exhibition completely to the Reds’ favour as Chris Heisey widened the lead to 4-2 with
an RBI single.
Stubbs, entering for his sixth at-bat, finally succeeded in smashing a ball. The right-hand batter launched a huge 406-feet long grand slam to centre off Cory Luebke, who had already denoted the game to the Reds.
Before entering into eleventh, it was the complete outing for pitchers as both starters did not toss any loose pitches and restricted the batters to just nine hits.
The Reds starter Sam LeCure was impressive with his six innings, getting eight strike-outs for just one run and two walks. The right-hand pitcher, making his second start of the season, provided what the manager Dusty Baker was expecting from him. The 26-year-old
tossed 54 strikes off 87 pitches and ended the game with an exceptional 2.25 earned run average.
He received full support from relievers Aroldis Chapman, Bill Bray and closer Logan Ondrusek as they did not permitted any run in their short spells. However, reliever Nick Masset, who came in for LeCure in the eighth inning, went two hits for one run. Closer
Francisco Cordero pitching in a pressure situation proved his class and earned a save without allowing any hit and managed one strike-out.
The Padres’ left-hand starter Clayton Richard, having a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA in the season, started impressively striking-out the Reds’ top prospect Stubbs on his first three pitches. However, he went loose in the later part of the inning and permitted
the Reds an early one-run lead. The 27-year-old ball thrower retaliated immediately and managed two more strike-outs before allowing a run to Stubbs in the fifth inning. Richard threw for seven innings and allowed two runs, two walks while striking-out four
batters with a 2.45 ERA.
The Padres’ relievers Luke Gregerson, Heath Bell and closer Mike Adams did not go for any runs, but closer Luebke lost his throws and awarded loose pitches. He earned his first lost of the season.
