Cincinnati Reds deny having any conversation with Roy Oswalt – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ general manager Walt Jocketty on Tuesday, February 7, vehemently denied having had any conversation with Roy Oswalt in order to hire him for the team. The subject of tremendous media frenzy, the free-agent starter was rumoured to be
avidly sought by the Cincinnati Reds.
However, with the strong denial that the Cincinnati Reds’ general manager came up with on Tuesday, it is now manifestly clear that Oswalt has no chance to be part of the team. Jocketty stated that it was the media that had put the Reds into it. Jocketty
also added, with a tinge of bitter frankness, that he was tired of it.
"The media has been putting us into it. I'm tired of it," Jocketty said. "I try to be upfront with you guys. I've gotten a lot of calls from people. I'm not saying something couldn't ever happen, but there's nothing to lead me to believe we will sign him."
With the denial issued by the Reds, there are other potential aspirants which might be considering Roy Oswalt’s name. From the Texas Rangers to the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, there is a list of teams that will like to induct him in the team.
Nonetheless, Jocketty commented that he does not know where Oswalt was going. "I don't know where he's going," Jocketty said. "We haven't had any serious discussions with him. We've had no contact with that player."
Cincinnati Reds have in recent weeks tried to fill the roster with a combination of experienced and young players. Oswalt’s induction will augur well for the defence, however, it might be the finances that the Reds are unable to afford at this juncture.
The 34-year-old pitcher has a good career record including his consistent performance the last year where he played on behalf of the Philadelphia Phillies. With the 23 games that he started for the Phillies, a team that lost in the postseason, Oswalt won
nine of the games, maintaining an ERA of 3.69.
Oswalt is a tremendous player with loads of talent. A majority of the teams in the Major League would be happy to sign him. It remains to be seen as to which team finally offers an acceptable deal to him.
