Cincinnati Reds destroy San Francisco Giants 9-0 to grab series 3-0 – MLB Update
The National League’s Cincinnati Reds proved a nightmare club for the San Francisco Giants, as they crushed the defending World Series Champions 9-0 in the rubber game and 3-0 in the three-game series at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.
In the series finale, the Reds dominated in both forms of the game as their starter Johnny Cueto put in a brilliant performance with his stunning pitching and batters piled up nine vital runs to write the destruction for the Giants. The Reds has already
snatched a 4-3 win in series-opener and 7-2 in the last game.
Cueto worked all nine innings, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking-out six batters to pinch his seventh win in 16 starts in 2011 regular season. His performance was the result of the confidence his manager Dusty Baker expressed upon him.
"Dusty asked me for a complete game this morning. I said, 'I will,'” Cueto said.
After a stunning display despite having a low number of starts, 25-year-old pitcher managed to get the first position in National League in ERA. Before this game, he was 1.88 ERA and was in need of just over seven innings to lead the NL. He tossed more than
the expectations of his manager to lower his ERA to 1.72 ERA.
"We just want him to go pitch and don't worry about anything and just be himself," Baker said. "He just keeps getting better and improving and improving and throwing strikes. He and Ramon are working great together."
Baker felt excitement right from the start of the first inning, because of dazzling hits by his batters. Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce each scored to combine three runs in the first inning. Following this, third baseman Todd Frazier touched
a phenomenal hit to send into the crowd for one run in the fourth inning.
Bruce hit a sacrifice fly to centre, Renteria scored in the fifth inning and Votto stroked a homer to centre-field for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to elevate the lead to 8-0
Yonder Alonso singled in the eighth to cement the score at 9-0.
Giants’ Barry Zito had one of his bad days in this season. He went for five runs on eight hits in five innings for his fourth loss of the 2011 season. Guillermo Mota gave away three runs on three hits in just over one inning. Ramon Ramirez remained scoreless
while Javier Lopez, who was introduced at the end of the game, gave way one run in one inning.
Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy was furious of the way his batting line-up performed. He wanted them to take a part in the game especially when the pitchers were not performing.
