Cincinnati Reds discuss Mike Leake’s role – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds are sorting out the names for the rotation in the upcoming season. All the same, the focus remains on the hitting as well wherein they want to re-sign free agent Ryan Ludwick.
On Wednesday, December 5, general manager Walt Jocketty hinted that Mike Leake may well be used in the rotation.
"He'll still probably be a starter for now," Jocketty said. "It's something we'll determine in Spring Training and see how it shakes out."
Jocketty was commenting on the possible shakeup of rotation and bullpen. There were initially some suggestions that the Reds are weighing up the options to play Leake as reliever. But, like Jocketty said, all this shall be decided in Spring Training.
After signing a three-year contract with Jonathan Broxton, the Reds have an array of options now. Aroldis Chapman, the club’s most successful closer this past season, is being considered as a starter for next season.
Subject to discussion, there were already some reports suggesting that Jocketty has had talks with Leake’s agent. Also, importantly, there are reports of Bryan Price – Reds' pitching coach, speaking to Leake himself.
All these developments come simultaneously with the ongoing Winter Meetings whose momentum – as the general manager said, has slowed down. The Reds have not made any significant contract offer yet, nor has there been any success with regards to re-signing free-agent Ryan Ludwick.
"That's been less productive the last 48 hours," Jocketty said.
Among other things and considerations, a run-producing left fielder is needed for the Reds at this point in time. That is where Ryan Ludwick figures prominently.
However, having been quiet in the Winter Meetings, the Reds have so far made no big progress to cite. However, it is to be emphasised that the Reds had not come with a big wish-list and price tags to offer.
Instead, it was to be a moderate one. The urgency for now seems having to sort out and address the immediate issues. Their roster seems almost complete apart from the few positions that need to be filled. Signing Ludwick will be an important first step in this regard.
