Cincinnati Reds edge past Houston Astros, 3-2: MLB Update
The collective effort from the Cincinnati Reds’ batters and pitchers resulted in the Club's 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on May 4.
The Reds’ Manager, Dusty Baker, was contended with his team's performance. Speaking to reporters, he said, “That's the kind of team we have. If you go home, you might miss the ballgame. Sometimes, you have games that you can't believe you won, just like
sometimes you have games you can't believe you lost.”
The first two innings were scoreless for both the teams. In the third inning, the Astros led off with 2-0 when Jason Bourgeois drove a shot for a single and Michael Bourn arrived at the loaded bases to complete his single. Bourgeois joined the club in place
of Carlos lee who suffered a rib-cage injury during the last game on collision with this team-mate. Bourgeois displayed a good performance over the last four games as he went 9-for-17 with three doubles.
Both the sides were unable to score even a single run from fourth to eighth inning of the game. The Astros’ Brett Wallace had the worst day as he went 0-for-4 and finished the game with 11 hitting-streak. The other batters also struggled to post a run for
the Astros, but the day was not in favour of them.
On the other side, the Reds’ batters opened their scoring account in the final inning and clinched the game with 3-2 lead when Jay Bruce played a double shot. Bruce said, “It was like we were sleeping, then we woke up. We tend to do that. Anytime they walk
the leadoff guy, you know you have the opportunity to score some runs. We have a knack for doing that. It shows our resiliency.”
Chris Heisey and Joey Votto made a single on contribution with Drew Stubbs towards the outfield area. Brandon Phillips went 1-for-3 with a walk but ended it without stealing a run. After winning the game, Heisey said, “It's hard to believe we had one hit
and came back to win.”
The Reds’ starter, Travis Wood, pitched wisely as he struck out seven batters and gave away just two runs on five hits with two earned runs. The Astros batters completed four walks against him. The relievers also did pretty well for the Reds as they permitted
no run in their combined three inning pitches. Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth inning for his first save.
On the other side, the Astros' starter, Aneury Rodriguez, threw superbly right through the game, but his effort was not enough to squeeze a win for his team. He gave away no run on a single hit and had three strike-outs in five inning pitches.
