Cincinnati Reds extend Jay Bruce’s contract with six-year deal
The Cincinnati Reds have been on the rise in the recent months. They made history when they clinched the 2010 National League Central title. They had a bad defensive record before this year, but now the side has awoken from their slumber to become one of
the hottest clubs in Major League baseball (MLB). The club’s activity has been limited to in the off-season so far, but they have been signing on their current players on long-term deals in order to develop the side in the coming years.
The Reds management is trying to sign on the existing squad members with extensions, and while the off season still continues, the ball club is hoping all of its players accept the deals to ensure future cost control and continuous productivity. The Reds
have a hard task ahead, and with the St. Louis Cardinals likely to be a threat next season, it’s important that the side moves towards imperative restructuring if need be.
For now, Cincinnati is evaluating players. Much to the surprise of the supporters, the team has been signing on contract extensions for a lot of ball players. One recent star to join the list is 23-year-old outfielder, Jay Bruce. The young gun is one of
the hottest commodities out there in the league. The player has reportedly agreed to a $51 million contract, which will pan out over six years. There is however an extra year’s option and that will raise the value of the deal to $63 million.
The move can be compared to a similar signing that was made in March, between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Justin Upton. The two players are of the same age, and are now arbitration eligible. There are performance clauses packed in with the deal, and if
Bruce can avail some of those perks, he could get a lot more out of the deal than expected.
Jay has been part of the Reds for a long time, and his figures from 2010 depict a rising star in his youth with a lot of power on the forefront. His batting average was up at .281 last season. In addition to that, he pulled in 80 runs from 143 hits. He also
smashed 25 home runs during the campaign, and produced 70 Runs Batted In (RBI’s). Bruce’s on base percentage was hitting .353 and he registered a slugging percentage of .493
