Cincinnati Reds looking to start Edinson Volquez for Opening Day – MLB News
It looks like Edinson Volquez will be the starting pitcher on Opening Day for the Cincinnati Reds.
Volquez was overjoyed by the news of his starting position. He is tremendous pitcher with the talent and capability to render any batting side useless. Reds’ manager Dusty Baker understands the enormous potential of the pitcher and has made the decision
to start him in the all important Opening Day encounter with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Reds will be looking to get a good start to their regular season campaign and the team definitely feels that Edinson is the pitcher to get to job done. Volquez is also fully aware of the importance of Opening Day, as he will be looking to put in an amazing
performance for the Reds as they take on the Brewers.
"I thought Cueto might be it, or Bronson for No. 1," Volquez said. "They're giving me the opportunity to be No. 1 and I'm excited. It's an honor. ... It surprised me when they told me. Those two guys just signed big contracts. I signed for one year. Pitching
the first day is unbelievable."
The irony is that Edinson recently signed a one year deal with team as Bronson Arroyo and Johnny Cueto just signed three and four year contracts with the Reds. This surprised Volquez as was discussing his excitement at being the starter for Opening Day.
At the end of last season, Edinson had Tommy John surgery on his elbow. He has managed to work very hard and make a comeback in the team. The fact that he has been selected as the starter for Opening Day is very impressive.
"I feel 100 percent right now," Volquez said. "I don't feel anything in my arm. I've been throwing a lot. Before I came here, I threw five [bullpen sessions], one live BP and two innings. I've already got three [bullpen sessions] down here."
The Reds are obviously quite impressed with the way Volquez has worked on his fitness and pitching accuracy. The team will be looking to him for a successful start to the regular season, where the Reds will be hoping for great things for their pitcher.
It will be interesting to see how well Edinson can manage to perform and it will be a true to test to his fitness level after having surgery. Regardless of the outcome, the fact that he was selected to be the starting pitcher for Opening Day is proof enough
of his talent and throwing prowess in the League.
As Spring Training moves along, the Reds are getting their team in order for the grueling regular season which is right around the corner.
