The Cincinnati Reds’ newly acquired reliever Jonathan Broxton on Wednesday, August 1, expressed his delight with the crowd’s ovation for him after the win over the San Diego Padres. Broxton was instrumental in securing the 6-4 win, which also concluded the series with 2-1 win for the Reds.
Broxton attributed his impressive one-inning spell to adrenaline. "That was nice. They have great fans here and they're real respecting," said Broxton, pitched for the first time for the Reds. "I had a lot of adrenaline out there. I don't know how much longer that can go, but especially for the first day, I had a lot of adrenaline."
Wednesday's victory for the Reds was celebrated with gusto. However, the most breathtaking of scenes was witnessed when Broxton left the ballpark – with a standing ovation from the crowd. He came to pitch the eighth inning, just when the team had the lead.
Apparently effortlessly, Broxton went on to outmanoeuvre the San Diego Padres hitters. Striking-out Mark Kotsay of the San Diego Padres, Broxton did not let the other two batters to go easy, throwing them out with two dribblers.
The Reds are now bestowed with some of the fascinating relievers, emboldening it with great force. Already leading the bullpen in the National League, the Reds are poised to continue the winning march, adding to the challenges against the rival teams.
Broxton will be an incredibly invaluable addition to the team’s bullpen at this point in time. Thus the Reds have made a right choice of the Trade Deadline which ended on July 31.
Broxton also shed some light on the haste with which he had to pack everything and leave for Cincinnati.
"It's crazy to get the phone call yesterday and I spent all night packing up," Broxton said. "I finally got to bed around 2:30. I packed up the whole house and I got the wife and kids out this morning and got on a plane and came here."
The Reds would now be looking forward to more of such contributions by Broxton given the talent and power that he possesses along with experience.
