Cincinnati Reds’ pitchers dominate game against Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 - MLB Update
The Cincinnati Reds conquered the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 in the pitchers dominated three-game series opener at the Great American Ball Park on Friday, June 3.
The Reds’ starter Bronson Arroyo, who has lost his previous three games, one each by Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates, made an impressive come-back with his fast curveballs to crush the league rivals. The 34-year-old right-hand
pitcher held the opposition scoreless until fourth inning when he gave away the game opening single to James Loney.
After allowing this single, Arroyo quickly stabilised himself and tossed two more innings to complete his six innings spell in which he allowed one run on five hits, walked none and struck-out two batters to nip his 3-game losing streak. With this win, Arroyo
has improved his record to 4-5 with 5.37 ERA in 12 starts.
Relievers’ Logan Ondrusek, Nick Masset and closer Francisco Cordero each threw one scoreless inning to provide the best back up to their starter. Ondrusek tossed eight strikes of 12 pitches to hold his seventh game of the season. Masset allowed one hit and
struck-out one batter on 20 pitches to hold his sixth game of the season while Cordero took out one batter on just eight pitches to save his 11th game of the season.
The Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda despite tossing unplayable pitches in the first four innings lost his sixth game of the season. The 36-year-old right-hand pitcher did not allow any run in his first four innings but in the fifth, he went for an RBI double,
which proved to be a defeat earning runs for the Dodgers.
Apart from these runs on six hits, Kuroda also yielded four walks to bear his third-straight loss of the season with a 3.46 ERA.
"I got behind in the count," Kuroda said. "I got myself in trouble. They have a lot of power, especially in this ballpark. I guess I was too careful."
Despite the Dodgers’ relievers Mike MacDougal, Scott Elbert and Matt Guerrier each remained scoreless in their spells, the batters could not generate any special performance with the bat to take the game back into their side. The Dodgers made just six hits
on combined 31 at-bats in nine innings.
Scoring the winning RBI double for his club, the Reds’ third baseman Scott Rolen improved his RBIs to 20 in the 2011 season. He also has two homers with slugging average of .385.
