Cincinnati Reds ponder over the roster
The Cincinnati Reds seem to have difficulty making a final decision on 28- or 30-man roster. The team manager Dusty Baker alluded to this aspect in his talks with the media persons on Friday, March 30.
"It's a very difficult thing, because you can't keep everybody," Reds manager Dusty Baker said on Friday. "If we could keep 28, it'd be no problem. But then we'd probably want 30."
The Cincinnati Reds have a unique mixture of players to rely on this regular season. It is for this reason that the team finds it not very easy to announce the roster at this point in time. The current status of it remains tentative.
Among other things, it is the final two bench spots that need to be sorted out. The list of players available for it includes the names of Paul Janish, Wilson Valdez, Todd Frazier, Willie Harris and Juan Francisco.
It goes without saying that they all are competitive and – therefore, deserving enough to secure the spot there. Nonetheless, the team manager has to opt for a better criterion to choose as to who qualifies to be in the list.
He does it through seeing into the weakness and strength, to the situation and the table. "They all bring something, strengths and some weaknesses, to the situation and the table," Baker said. "It just depends if we can use their strengths and live with
their weaknesses in the present. Or can they go down and get better and be prepared to come back?"
On the other hand, there was a good news that the Reds received. The pitcher Mat Latos – who was suffering from strained calf, had a throwing session on Friday morning. The pitching coaches, Bryan Price and Mark Jenkins seemed all satisfied with the spell.
"All good," Price said. "No issues."
With the list of players currently uncertain, the Reds are taking their time before making the final decision. From what it seems, the team has a variety of choices available to them that will enable them to have a rather strong team to play against the
rivals.
