Cincinnati Reds’ prospect Denis Phipps vows to make team – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ prospect Denis Phipps stated on Monday, February 27, that he is trying to do whatever he can to make the team. The talented player from Dominican Republic has emerged as the outfield prospect for the Reds.
“I'm trying to do whatever I can to make the team and learn what I can," Phipps said.
Phipps is currently involved in the workout sessions in the Reds’ Spring Training camp at Goodyear Arizona. To inch closer to his dream of becoming a Major League Baseball player, Phipps has indeed trodden a tough path.
Hailing from San Pedro de Macoris, Phipps has exerted himself to acquire the set of skills requisite to excel in the game. That he is heavenly bequeathed player is certainly beyond any doubt since he has been playing when he was only 17.
"I started baseball when I was 17," said the 26-year-old Phipps. "In my hometown, everybody played baseball and I didn't."
Interestingly, up until he decided to switch to baseball, he had always remained a basketball player. However, a stage came in his life where he opted for playing baseball. Things worked out well, and his decision proved timely and right.
His hometown had always produced players of excellent quality. He came out as a player of great aptitude who had the potential to shine. If any proof was needed, he had a tremendous past season at Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Louisville.
Becoming the Minor League Hitter of the Year, Phipps had a batting average of .346, having had 12 home-runs to his credit with more than 60 RBIs throughout the season. That is where his choice proves right.
While he initially intended to be part of the Chicago Cubs, he now is an invaluable part of the Reds. "I tried out with the Cubs, and they said I should be in the outfield and could get better. It was based on my arm," Phipps said.
With the talent and luck on his side, Phipps is all set to regale the baseball fans with his magical hits when the season starts.
