Cincinnati Reds rest several players in the finale against Los Angeles Dodgers – MLB News
Cincinnati Reds decided on Sunday, September 23, to rest a number of their players in the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Reds who won the National League Central crown on Saturday after beating the Dodgers are now preparing themselves for the playoffs.
Those who were rested for Sunday’s game included all key players for the Reds such as Jay Bruce, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Ryan Ludwick and Zack Cozart. The decision is understandable given the Reds plans for the near future.
With the rest that the players got on Sunday and the Monday’s off day, they will have a total of two days rest, giving them the respite they needed. Reds are all set to start the three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers from Tuesday.
Now that the Reds have booked their place in the playoffs, the team management wants to be rested both mentally and physically.
Reds have come across as a competitive side, beyond any doubt. Even without the presence of these key players, competitiveness will be a feat of the Reds, something they have gloriously maintained the whole season.
"I don't think that's too difficult," acting manager Chris Speier said. "With our personnel, we put a competitive team out there, I think, every day. We are going to take care of ourselves and make sure that the people that need a day or two to get their injuries under wrap will take those. I don't think that's going to be hard."
On the other hand, Reds will have their manager Dusty Baker back now after he was released from a Chicago hospital after four days of treatment. He was admitted to hospital after the complaints of an irregular heartbeat.
"Hopefully with the day off [Monday] and him getting a good relaxing night tonight at home, he can come back on Tuesday and see how he feels. It's great news," said the acting manager Chris Speier.
With the spectacular victory on Saturday and clinching the National League Central title, it will be interesting to see how the Reds maintain their winning momentum.
