Cincinnati Reds rest three players in game against Milwaukee Brewers – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday, August 8, decided to rest some of the regulars as the team was to take on the Milwaukee Brewers. Those who were given a day off were Zack Cozart, Scott Rolen and Ryan Hanigan.
The decision came at a time when the Cincinnati Reds are engaged in one of the longest stretches of games this season, as they have to play 19 games. The Reds' manager Dusty Baker, attributed this decision to the team’s being strategic.
"It's kind of like running this race, and if you make your kick too early, you run out of gas," Baker said. "You can put your guys in the ground and they'll never return. So you've got to run a strategic race, which we're trying to do."
It is also worthwhile to recall here that the Reds have seen a sudden slump recently, winning four consecutive games. The Padres were the last team to beat them in the finale of three-game series, following which they were swept in the three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
However, despite the odds that are at play here for the team, the Reds' manager does not want to put much pressure on the players and have a calculated race.
"I know how to run this race," he said. "If you look at my teams that won, look at my record in the last month of the season on winning teams. We've always done very well, partly because of the personnel and partly because of how we program them with energy levels.”
The Reds are all set to play against the Chicago Cubs a four-game series at Wrigley Field. The series is awaited eagerly by the Reds and their fans. It is coming at a time when the Reds have barely done well, especially in the last four games.
Cincinnati Reds will definitely want a strong show in the series so as to retain its top position in the National League Central ranking. Although the challenges abound, the club is famously known to have ably dealt with all pressure lately, thereby maintaining their dominance on the Division.
