Cincinnati Reds rout San Francisco Giants with 5-2 win in NLDS Game 1 – NLDS Update
Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce smashed a homer apiece on Saturday, October 6, to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
At AT&T Park, the Reds lost their ace Johnny Cueto in the very first inning after the cramps in his back, prompting the team to bring in Sam LeCure and Mat Latos and three other pitchers to score the seemingly hard victory.
As Cueto left in the first inning, LeCure came to pitch followed by Latos, who tossed 4.1 innings, surrendering only a run. Giants, on the other hand, saw Matt Cain gave up three runs in his five innings, allowing five hits.
Brandon Phillips smashed two-run homer in the third innings to give the Reds a much-needed 2-0 lead in the third inning followed by a solo homer of Bruce, tripling the lead for the Reds. Giants were then restrained by Latos who threw exceptionally.
The only run he surrendered was in the sixth inning when Buster Posey hit a homer to left, bringing the Reds lead down to 3-1. Sean Marshall then came to maintain the Reds’ lead. Jonathan Broxton pitched a scoreless and hitless eighth to keep the Giants' batters at bay.
It was then Brandon Phillips in the ninth to hit a single followed by Xavier Paul’s run, making it 5-2 for the Reds by the end of the ninth inning.
Aroldis Chapman was dispatched to mound to pitch the ninth inning, a game wherein he had to pitch effectively to pave the way victory for the Reds. He allowed only a run and then shut-out other batters to facilitate the team’s amazing 5-1 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
It is now Bronson Arroyo, with 12-10 record in the regular season, who will make the start in the Game 2 of the NLDS. On the other hand, it will be Madison Bumgarner for the San Francisco Giants. The Reds hope to dominate and win Game 2 the way they did it here.
