Cincinnati Reds sign free-agent relief pitcher Ryan Madson for one year – MLB News
Sources are reporting that Cincinnati Reds’ management have signed free agent relief pitcher Ryan Madson for one year worth $8.5 million.
Ryan Madson, who has played almost seven seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies in the past, certainly possesses some huge baseball skills. He was one of the main men behind the Phillies’ National League’s East Championship last season.
Coming with a 2.37 ERA along with 32 saves, 62 strikeouts and 1.15 WHIP, Madson has the capacity to uphold Reds’ sustained performance in the next season.
Not only Madson will be providing a great depth to the Reds roster, but younger players will also learn from Madson’s vast Major League playing experience.
Though, this one year contract has not been finalised yet but after a complete physical, the Reds will officially announce their relationship with Madson. Earlier, some other Major League teams have also tried to sign Madson including the Texas Rangers along with New York Yankees, Colorado Rockies, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and most importantly the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Even the Angels were very close to sign Madson but after the acquisition of Albert Pujols worth $254 million, the Angels were left with not enough money for further new signings.
Later, Angels' general manager Jerry Dipoto also mentioned in the media regarding free agent Madson and why they do not think of signing him at the moment.
Dipoto said, “What I'll say with some degree of certainty is that our most significant acquisitions have already been made. We're trying to add depth, and in a perfect world, we’d like to find another guy to join Jordan Walden, Scott Downs and LaTroy Hawkins to help with those last nine outs. But closer has never been the real priority.”
Now since Madson has made a successful arrival in the Reds’ roster, all those past speculations have fizzled out while he must start a new beginning with them in order to bring sustainability in the roster for a longer period.
Last year, the Cincinnati Reds had a 79-83 win loss record and to improve this low record, they certainly need to give a little freedom to their new signings for a more open and offensive performance.
