Cincinnati Reds steal 10th inning 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, July 14, beat the St. Louis Cardinals by 3-2 to win the first series against them this season. The 10th inning victory, which came with a walk-off, has placed the Reds in a unique position in the division now.
The Reds have finally made it to the top position in the National League Central, having an advantage of just over three games over the defending champions, the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals, it goes without saying, has tough challenges ahead to grapple with.
The news for the Cincinnati Reds is that of excitement. They stand a good chance to make it to the post-season this year.
"People are excited, and they should be, and hopefully they stay that way to the end," Reds' manager Dusty Baker said. "You play better in front of large crowds, especially at home. This is a big series for them and us. You want to start the second half like this against a team that's chasing you, and hopefully we can put some distance on them this weekend."
Reds had Mike Leake to pitch six effective innings, allowing two runs to keep the Cardinals’ hitters at bay. But it was Ryan Ludwick who did the most important job at the end. He homered in the bottom of the 10th inning to bestow victory over the Reds when the game was tied by 2-2. Ludwick did not seem in a good form when the game kicked off, especially when he was 0-for-2. But he reversed everything when he came in the middle of the 10th inning.
"He was 0-2, but that's what the game's about," manager Dusty Baker said. "Battle, battle, battle, foul one off and hope you get one to drive -- and he did."
With the win here, the Reds now have won four games and lost as many against the Cardinals this season. Sunday’s final game will be an opportunity for the Reds to win and gain an ultimate lead this season.
To do that, the Reds have Homer Bailey as the starter, who has a chance to win a remarkable glory for himself and the team.
