Cincinnati Reds thrash Houston Astros 5-3 to win seventh consecutive game – MLB News
Drew Stubbs went for a big hit in the ninth inning on Wednesday, July 25, to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Houston Astros by 5-3 at Minute Maid Park. This was the second consecutive night that the Reds staged a comeback in the ninth to win the game and on both occasions it was Drew Stubbs who did what was needed.
This was, more importantly, seventh straight win for the Reds. With such a magnificent display of game, the Reds now occupy the top slot in the National League Central, getting closer to the post-season games.
"Well, we haven't been really playing that well," Baker said. "We've been playing well enough to win, which is what we're here for. We've been getting some clutch hits, some very good pitching and that's what it starts with is the pitching ... we've put together some good streaks and that's why we are where we are."
While both the teams’ starters pitched extraordinarily well, at the end it was the Reds’ hitters who prevailed. Homer Bailey pitched seven strong innings, not allowing any run and giving up only four hits. Bud Norris of the Astros, on the other hand, allowed only a run in his seven inning spell.
Drew Stubbs doubled to right in the third inning to give the team 1-0 lead which was doubled by Scott Rolen with his single in the eighth. The Astros made their come back in the eighth inning when Scott Moore and J. D. Martinez hit RBIs to take the lead to 3-2 for the Houston Astros.
It was Reds’ reliever Logan Ondrusek who gave up three runs. However, Sean Marshall came down hard on the Astros and contained them.
Drew Stubbs once again delivered a huge hit in the ninth followed by Jay Bruce’s single to deep-right to lead to victory.
Aroldis Chapman came in the ninth to get his 19th save of the season to wrap up the game with 5-3 win for the Reds. With the victory, not only did the Reds sweep the series, but also increased their winning streak to seven games.
