Cincinnati Reds weighing names for rotation in remaining NLDS games – MLB News
As National League Division Series has entered a crucial phase, Cincinnati Reds are weighing the names for the rotation for the remaining games. Johnny Cueto, whose start was cut short in the Game 1 against the San Francisco Giants, is uncertain as far as his return on the mound is concerned.
However, if the competition stiffens further and the Giants spring back, winning a couple of games, Mat Latos is one name being considered for Game 5. However, for manager Dusty Baker, speculating about the name at this stage amounts to going too far.
Pitching coach Bryan Price is being consulted for the club’s next move. Under discussion with the general manager Walt Jocketty’s is also the status of Johnny Cueto. Still, Dusty Baker asserts the club has not gone as far as speculating about the starter for Game 5.
"We really haven't gotten that far," Baker said. "Bryan and I have to discuss it with Walt. We already pressed it last night on three days rest. We'd like to think that Johnny would be ready. If not, we'll do it like we've been doing it and adjusting."
Mat Latos, who was brought in to pitch in Game 1 after Cueto exited, pitched remarkably well, allowing only a run in the four innings that he pitched. On Sunday, he said he is all ready to pitch even in Game 4.
"If they need me to, Game 4 is a possibility," Latos said. "I'm young still, so it's not like I'm Bronson [Arroyo] where I have some miles on me. I'm able to -- I feel real good, so if need be and if I need to go Game 4, I will go Game 4."
In the regular season, Latos made 33 starts, having had a wonderful 14-4 record with 3.48. His winning percentage (.778) was second in the National League with a total of 209.1 innings pitched, having 185 strike-outs to his credit.
The fact that he had a solid Game 1 makes him a likely name for either Game 4 to make a start against the San Francisco Giants.
