Cincinnati Women’s Open 2010: Jelena Jankovic and Caroline Wozniacki out
The top seeded tennis players from the women’s side, Jelena Jankovic along with Caroline Wozniacki, who is seeded second for the ongoing Cincinnati Women’s Open, were sent back packing in the third round of the championship on Thursday.
Akgul Amanmuradova, a qualifier did well to knock down Jelena Jankovic in their third round clash with in a total of two sets. The final match score was 7-6 (2), 6-4. On the other hand, Wozniacki was hammered down by Frenchmen Marion Bartoli in a two setter battle. The final match score read 6-4, 6-1.
As a result of yesterday’s upset match, Kim Clijsters is the only player from the top nine seedings left in the Cincinnati Open.
The sixth seeded Russian tennis ace Vera Zvonareva was defeated by Flavia Pennetta in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 6-3 where as Agnieszka Radwanska, a seventh seeded player for the tournament, was thrashed by Maria Sharapova in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-2, 6-3. Yanina Wickmayer, an eighth seeded Chinese was taken down by Yanina Wickmayer in a three setter clash. The final match score was 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Shahar Peer from Israel was also beaten by Russian tennis player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in Thursday’s match in Cincinnati. The final match score was 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
As far as Kim Clijsters is concerned, she has advanced to the next round of the tournament after comfortably knocking down Christina McHale in a total of two sets.
Maria, who is scheduled to meet Bartoli in today’s match, believes that upsets prove that the women’s game is filled with a lot of talent.
“I think it simply speaks high of the depth and variety of talented players at the moment”, said Sharapova, who is participating in the championship on the very first occasion in her career.
The former top ranked tennis player from the Women’s side, Ana Ivanovic continued her winning momentum with yet another comprehensive win over Elena Vesnina in a two setter clash. The final match score was 6-0, 6-3. As a result of this victory, Ana has successfully made her way into the quarterfinal round of the Cincinnati Women’s Open tennis tournament. Ana will face Amanmuradova in her quarterfinal clash in Cincinnati.
As far as the top seeded Jankovic is concerned, she was knocked out of the San Diego tennis tournament after losing in the first round of the event. And here again, she couldn’t reach the latter rounds of the event. While commenting on her defeat, Jelena said, “The main reason behind today’s defeat was that I didn’t serve well at all in contrast to her serves which were quite accurate. Moreover, I had few chances throughout the match. And when I had them, I didn’t take advantage of them. Nothing went my way in today’s match. I couldn’t play the way I wanted to. And without any question, she played better than me in today’s match.”
Wozniacki on the other hand was on top with 4-3 in the first set of yesterday’s match however she couldn’t maintain her dominance all through the match as Bartoli took charge of the match by winning the next eight games.
Bartoli while commenting on her victory after the match said, “Today’s, match was a huge challenge for me and I am glad that I did well to win it in the end. I felt that my serve is one of the factors that helped me a lot in winning today’s match as I served better than her”.
As a result of this victory, Bartoli will face Maria Sharapova in her quarterfinal match of the Cincinnati Women’s Open tennis tournament.
