NPR asked the McCain campaign — specifically, Cindy McCain — to comment or respond. Neither replied.

This reminds me of the Vietnamese man who saved McCain's life when he was shot down. McCain never mentions it, but numerous people saw it happen and hated the guy for rescuing an American. The guy read McCain's book about his capture and it never mentioned him at all...which bothered the man. He wrote to the senator and the senator, after MUCH pressure, met breifly with him and gave him a medal. The man went back home and proudly displayed the medal, but again heard stories that McCain refused to admit that he didn't remove himself from the wrecked plane....that the vietnamese man had helped him. He told his children that the medal was 'priceless' and they should never sell it or try to get rid of it. He died a few years back, just after learning that the medal he received wasn't a medal at all, but a cheap souvenir from the senate gift shop.
