Current Rx: Ciprofloxacin 500 mg BID for 30 days

Condition: Prostatitis

Other than the prostatitis I've been diagnosed with on Monday (4 days ago), I'm healthy.

I'm training for a marathon and have been running 30-40 miles weekly. I've read online about the suspected relationship between fluoroquinolones and tendonitis (and ruptured tendons) in some patients taking Cipro.

I guess I'm concerned and not sure what effect this should have on my running? Should it have any?

Can I continue running and see if any discomfort develops?

  1. See the following FDA label information, read the section on 'tendon effects':

    http://www.fda.gov/cder/foi/label/2008/0...

The dosage for your condition is a normal one, but it is on the extreme end of what other people take for other conditions.

Running until you find out if you have a problem is up to you, but if something went wrong it could be a catistrophic event.

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cipro

    http://www.webmd.com/drugs/mono-93-CIPRO...

the second link has the best info

the precautions section to the second link answers more of your concerns.....if it was me i wouldnt train too hard or be in the sun

    hope i could help

  3. I don't think it ought to affect your running if you just pay attention to your joints.  Cipro and other fluoroquinolones can cause inflammation of joints, but it's not a common side effect.  I'm not a doctor, but yes, I'd continue running and see if any discomfort develops.  Odds are that it won't.
