Circa defeat White Birch 8-6 to clinch Hampton Cup title at Bridgehampton Polo Club – Polo Update
Martin Pepa was at his best and set the pace for his team with four impressive goals, as Circa marked an 8-6 win over White Birch in the final match of the Hampton Cup that took place at the field of Bridgehampton Polo Club in New York on September 3.
With the impressive win, the Circa team lifted the title of the 2011 Hampton Cup.
Owing to having few handicaps, the Circa team received a single goal that helped them to make an impressive start. It is relevant to mention here that Peter Brant was replaced with Adam Lindemann in the final match of the tournament. Mariano Aguerre scored
off a penalty shot for White Birch and levelled the score at one-all. In the later time, Magoo Laprida notched a score from the field but the lead did not last for long. Aguerre marked the second goal and made the score even at the end of the first set of
play.
Martin Pepa served his team with another goal in the second period and put Circa ahead at the scoreboard with a single goal lead, 3-2. However, the attackers from White Birch were not ready to stay away. Aguerre, who was leading the action alone managed
to score another goal and tied the knots at three-each after the two chukkas.
Magoo Laprida of Circa unfolded the third period with a field goal and increased the tally up to four. The scores were not coming out as per the intensity of the match, as both Circa and White Birch were showing tough defence in the game. In the later time,
Fred Mannix of White Birch found an opportunity to score a goal on penalty shot and once again had it all even at four-each. However, the Circa team succeeded to establish their dominance in the game by earning a goal in the hands of Guille Aguero in the waning
moments of the first half.
After a short break between the two halves, White Birch reorganised and took the lead into their favour in the fourth round. The defensemen of Circa did not cope with the speed of the attackers from either side. Manning scored off a pair of penalty shots
and took one goal lead while holding Circa goalless throughout the period.
Circa and White Birch stiffened their defence in the second to last frame. Martin Pepa scored the only goal in the seven minutes for Circa and locked horns at six-all with one period left to play.
The defenders from Circa did not allow any action to White Birch in the last frame while obtaining two goals. Pepa scored the two goals and earned the victory for Circa in the title-claiming match of the Hampton Cup.
Owing to wonderful performance, Martin Pepa was honoured with MVP award while Lucy of Laprida was picked up as Best Playing Pony of the event.
