Circa edge past Equuleus in Hampton Cup Semi-finals: 12-11 – Polo Update
Magoo Laprida set the pace with six goals and had an impressive assist, as Circa clobbered Equuleus by a single goal, 12-11 in the semi-final match of the Hampton Cup that took place at the Bridgehampton Polo Club. The players from Circa showed dazzling
performances in the match and earned a berth in the finals of the tournament.
Six goal handicap player Kris Kampsen of Equuleus was in a shocked state of mind and not ready to accept the results. He stated that they have had a two-goal edge over Circa in the final frame but the tables were turned in the waning moments and they lost
the match. He said, “I can’t believe it. We had it; we were up by two goals in the final chukker.”
The game started at very fast pace with both teams looking for a spot in the title-claiming match of the event. The team of Circa received a handicap goal prior to the match that boosted the players in the crucial fixture. In the later time, Magoo Laprida
and Martin Pepa scored two and one goal respectively and expanded the lead up to four goals at the end of the first chukka. The team of Equuleus failed to open the scoring-account in the first frame of play and trailed by four goals, 4-0.
In the second period, the players from Equuleus made an outstanding comeback and reduced the lead down to a single point by scoring three unanswered goals. Kris Kampsen, Mariano Obregon and Mariano Gonzalez added one goal each which reduced the pressure
over Equuleus. Despite failing to score a goal, Circa was leading the game at 4-3.
In the third set of play, the two sides exchanged three goals and made the game more interesting and enthralling. In the opening minutes, Guille Aguero, Martin Pepa and Magoo Laprida notched one goal each and put Circa ahead on their way to success. However,
the players from Equuleus were not sitting inactively. Team Circa made plenty of mistakes, which allowed Equuleus to score goals. Kampsen and Gonzales scored off two and one penalty shot respectively and concluded half-time trailing at 6-7.
Both Circa and Equuleus displayed impressive style in the fourth period and locked horns at eight-all with two chukkas left to play. Aguero scored the solitary goal from Circa while Kampsen added two of which one was taken on penalty shot while the other
from the field.
In the second to last round, Aguero added a goal from the field which was countered by a couple of goals in the hands of Kampsen. Equuleus earned a single goal lead with seven minutes left to play. Obregon scored another goal and further expanded the lead.
However, Laprida notched three more goals and registered the win for Circa at 12-11.
