Question:

Circuit City screwed up my security system!! Anyone had this problem?

A few years back I replaced the standard stereo on my Chevy Blazer for a CD player. Since then I have continually had issues w/ the security system. It is preventing the truck from starting! We have checked several things & then brought it to a shop. At this point, we think if we put back in the standard stereo to reset the security system, we should be golden. Problem is we don't have it anymore but we may be able to get one from a junkyard. By the way, Circuit City screwed up the wiring in my truck when they installed the new stereo & has not helped at all in this matter. Any suggestions? Are we on the right track?!

  1. Here's your problem: Circuit city installed your CD player then after that your truck wont start.

Here's the question: Did the CD player work? if it is then power is going through your CD Player through the ignition key.

Here's the possible culprit: The CD Player draws larger current and therefore should have been installed with a separate circuit protection and power source through a Relay. What happens is if you install an additional electrical load (such as CD player) you have to modify the circuit in your car accessories because they were not designed to hold larger current than what was originally installed by chevy. In that case what happens is your ignition switch will heat up a lot and causes the contact points in your ignition switch to burn or melt and loose connection and when you try to start the truck which draws larger current to activate the starter motor it will the more looses connection and thus you wont be able to start your truck.

Car security has different functions such as immobilizer - it prevents the car to be started without a key through a transponder or a passkey which has nothing to do with your radio , and you have anti-theft features which prevents your radio to be used when stolen without the code and triggers an alarm when it is disconnected from your car when an unauthorized removal is done.

Your no-start condition may or may not be an isolated problem. It is not isolated when the CD player was erroneously installed and when it was not installed using a separate power source circuitry. Since you mentioned that your wiring harness caught up a fire then it suggests that you have an overloading problem and therefore your ignition switch has been affected. I've seen that happened many times being a certified auto technician with expertise on electrical wiring harness and automotive electrical circuit specialization.

It is not only important that Circuit city or best buy or anyone knows how to install audio system on any car but what is important is that the person installing your radio or CD player or any Audio system on your car knows exactly the make, design and electrical specification of your car and really know automotive electrical technology. NOT a HIT or MISS - lucky if it works and sorry if your car can't cope with audio upgrades.

  2. If you still have the receipt showing the stereo and some kind of proof that they installed it bring in your truck (if you can) with the receipt for the stereo and ask to speak with the manager. Have him look at your truck and tell him whats been going on, show him the problems if you can.

As for the problem. Maybe they wired the radio into the security system for some reason (so alarm goes off if stereo is ripped out) and they messed it up and crossed a couple wires or something

  3. I do not want to sound like an a$$, but I hope that you learned a valueable lesson on that one. If you wan to have anything installed properly avoid Best Buy, and Circut City as they employ sub par personnel. The hire the guys that you local audio shops will not hire.

My advice is to take it to a local audio shop, they install alarms all the time. They will be able to fix the problem. If you still had your receipt, I would go talk to the store manager. Let him know of the problem, so that he is aware of the discrepancy that they are having. But my suggestion is to just pay a local audio shop to fix it for you.

  4. The factory stereo will not solve the problem unfortunately.Second, Circuit City has no idea whatsoever about what they are doing when it comes to car audio systems. The reason I know this I went up there pretending like I was interested in buying a system from them ,but little did they know that I am a professional and custom installer myself.I am Mobile Electronics Certified Professional (MECP) as you may know it...And, the kind of system they were wanting to install for requires high-current alternators and high-current batteries and electrical system upgrades which is known as the "Big 3."They was not going to even do that. They do not know how to properly install a head unit receiver (CD Player) ,either. They wasn't even going to put in the adapter that protects my door chime which is a must. And the funny part about all of this was when I was pretending like I was going to buy a system from them they didn't even know that I am a custom and pro. installer......  You need to take it to a custom installer only and nobody else...I am not talking about anyone who can just wire a cd player ,but I am talking about the people who fools around with the fiberglass displays and stuff......And another thing if you have proof that Circuit City did all that and can prove it to a judge then you can get a lawyer and take it to court , as well...... And,you could own Circuit City.........
