Question:

Circular structures/buildings?

i need help finding areas that use circular shaped structures commonly as opposed square shaped. I already have the colliseum in rome, but does anybody else know of any others?

  1. Igloos, geodesic domes, yurts, and many castles.

Native Americans & US south-western folks use this architecture well, as did the Mayans, and do many aboriginal societies and migrating cultures (check out Malaysian tribes/African tribes)...Jewish temples are round, too.  The ideal was that round embraced the universal use of energy flow, the circle of life...which is true.

    Only when it was found that it was cheaper to build bigger by using corners, did squarer designs become popular...plus, you can divide & use land much more profitably by using squares than circles, and glass inserts are easier to create, transport, & implement much easier in cornered designs.

  3. The coliseum is actually an ellipse not a circle, but that's just me being picky.

    If you are looking for ancient examples, the tumulus tombs of Mycenae are round "beehives." The Heroon of Aeneas is based on this form; as are other tombs. Plus the much later Tomb of Cecelia Matella on the Appian Way in Rome is round.
