Cisco 871 router question

I recently got a hold of a cisco 871 wired router from a friend of mine whos business gave it to him to work from home. He was fired, but kept the equipment. He gave it to me, and now I'm looking to set up a wired home network between several different machines of mine.

I don't need help on the setup, I just have several questions concerning the router.

1-It was setup to go through a vpn, will I have to erase any settings on the actual hardware, or would that all be stored in the work computer my friend still owns.

2-Do I have to worry about any "phone home" options that may happen When I plug this in and set it up? I don't want to get a call from the company wondering why I have their $400 router.

Thanks in advance for the help!

  1. Well I suggest you to erase the old settings on that actual hardware for complete cleaning and reconfigure that said device once again.

bring up the router prompt and issue this following command to erase the current settings stored in that router:

    router#reload

    or

    router#erase nvram

then hit enter, if comfirm is asked hit enter again.

  2. Dear friend

first thing you do it Erase all the configuration and change into  new configuration into the Router, Then next step start using the router.
