My Grandmother was known as Cissy, I am quite sure this was a "nickname" though, can anyone out there tell me if this is short for a particular name or was it a common name in the 1800's unfortunately with both my parents deceased I am stuck

for answers!

Cheers in advance, Smiffy!

  1. Cecelia is my best guess.

    Some other thoughts:

    Alice

    Celia

    Christina (Christine)

    Clarice

    Clarissa

    Cynthia

    Frances

    Francesca

    Phyllis

    Priscilla

Elizabeth (Sissy Spacek's real name is Mary Elizabeth and also Elizabeth is common and known to spawn many nicknames)

However a lot of older sisters are called "sissy" by their younger siblings, sometimes for their entire life. I know it's a different spelling, but sometimes nicknames are nothing like the persons actual name. Good Luck :)

  2. Cecilia is one that others have suggested, but there is also Ciseley, Cecile.

  3. I had an aunt CELESTE, nickname "Sis"/"Sissy"

  4. My mother in law was called Cissy (spelled the same way) and her first name is Alice.  She was born in the 1940's.  She was called Cissy because she was the only girl amongst all male cousins and her brother.  My cousin Florence (born in the 70's)  is called Sissy for almost the same reason.  She grew up in a house hold of all boys.  I'm not saying that this is why your grandmother was Cissy, but it is a possible avenue to explore.

  5. Cecilia might be the one, but can never be sure unless you get her birth or death certificate.
