Citi Field to undergo drastic changes before 2012 – MLB Update
The New York Mets are remodelling the entire ballclub and Citi Field in no exception. It was observed that the dimensions of the ballpark are more congenial for the pitchers and are less favourable for the batters, who are the strength of the team.
A renowned offensive side, the Mets have made little use of the conditions at Citi Field since the ballpark opened in 2009 and it was only this year that in consultation with the members of the management, general manager Sandy Alderson concluded that the
dimensions of Citi Field are unfair for hitters and thus needed to be adjusted in accordance.
During the regular season, the Mets announced that the ballpark will be revamped drastically, lowering some walls and moving in others. On Monday, October 31, Alderson officially announced plans to alter the ballpark, where the wall towards left-field will
be lowered and the new fence encompassing the ballpark will be painted blue.
Explaining the change on the left-field wall, Alderson stated that an eight-foot wall will be raised in front of the old 16-feet wall, creating a wedge-like shape and adding 100 new seats in the space.
Alderson added that the new setup, in total, will add around 140 seats to the ballpark and will surely inflate the number of home-runs being hit. He continued that the Mets are probably the only team who have failed to take advantage of home conditions,
but with the changes coming in this year, Alderson believes things will change for the better.
The new dimensions will benefit the sluggers on the roster, David Wright and Jason Bay to name a few. Both players have experienced a decline in the number of home runs produced per season and will now want to show their true strength when the season kicks
off in 2012.
With Jose Reyes still in doubt for the next season, the Mets will want to add to their bull-pen strength. Reyes is a free agent as of now and is still awaiting a positive response from the only ballclub that he has ever known.
Alderson asserted that the new conditions will be more neutral and are designed in accordance to the strength of the team.
