Go to GOOGLE Earth and go to Sydney.  Pan out to widen the area and it will show surrounding towns and maybe properties for sale too.

The central coast is great and its straight along the m5 so it takes just under 2 hours and there are beaches everywhere and now is a great time to buy and bad time to sell. You've also got Wollongong which is about 45mins drive and growing and also near coast. Not sure about the pricing of real estate there though. Blue Mountains are beautiful and I grew up there but a lot of actors and artists have moved up there so prices are quite high but if you can afford it and don't mind snow sometimes its perfect. About an hour and 15mins from city. If you want closer you could go for Bankstown but its expensive there too or you could try Liverpool but that is full of drug addicts now but you can get cheap flats and houses if you look and its only 40klm from city. Strathfield is very beautiful as most of the homes have been kept renovated true to their era but this too is an expensive area. But if you keep looking you might be lucky enough to find the diamond in the rough that no-one else looks at thinking it will be too dear.

Central coast is nice about an hr outta syd (north) on the F3

Further north - Newcastle

Directly south - Illawarra region / City of Wollongong

South west - Southern Highlands (semi rural)

Newcastle is the place to be.  It's on the grow. And only a short distance to Port Stephens, the best holiday destination in NSW.
