Is it only the male citizens who held roles as producers, guardians, and auxiliaries? Why is this book important or not important?

  1. Plato's Republic is one of the seminal works of social, political, cultural and personal philosophy. If you took from it only that males were the dominant actors in his society, I suspect that you may have missed the point entirely. Plato's reflections on the very nature and structure of the republic, his views on the interactions between individuals and society, his points about individual responsibilities and duties toward the commonweal, form the basis for learning about the philosophy of concomitant rights and duties.

It is the meaning of man's role in his wider world that makes the book important.
