Cito’s last game in Toronto guides the Blue Jays to an inspirational 8-run win (Pt. 3)
The New York Yankees were trailing the resilient Toronto Blue Jays by 4 runs and there was still no sign of a counter attack against Cito Gaston’s men.
The bottom 4th inning had just concluded and Aaron Hill scored the 4th run for the team through john McDonald’s grounder into the fielder’s choice to shortstop. The game was now heading into the 5th inning and the travelling
Yankee fans were frustrated with their side that had no response for the hosts.
Brett Cecil was the starting pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays and he made sure the opposition was nowhere near his team, in terms of scoring. He kept the Yankees quiet in the top 5th and his inspiration was aligned with Cito Gaston, who had become
a source of inspiration for the ball team.
The Yankees, on the other hand had not learned their lesson and they kept Javier Vazquez on for the 5th inning. Many knew that the call by manager, Girardi was a tough one and carried many risks. The first thing to understand was that the Jays
batters were aware of Vazquez’s pitching style and had 4 runs in the bank to prove that.
Yunel Escobar began the bottom 5th with a single to the left. Jose Bautista got the hitter to second base after he grounded out to shortstop. Vernon Wells popped out to second and Lyle Overbay got a walk by the pitcher, to first.
Two bases were full and Aaron Hill came on to face Javier. The outcome of the face off was monumental to the blue birds’ push for the win. Hill smashed a 393 feet homer to the left and got Lyle and Yunel to the dugout with a run, each. The side moved onto
7 runs and the Yanks were surely in trouble now.
Alex Rodriguez soon responded for the Yanks and the run came in the top 6th. Joe Girardi’s men were in trouble and it took the big hitter to steer the side to a respectable position in the game. He scored with a 407 feet home run he banged towards
the left half of the park.
The Yankees were still far behind. Trailing by 6 runs, it seemed like the Jays had done the job. However, the inning wasn’t over as Rodriguez ran home for the first run.
Robinson Cano came in next to face Cecil and he got hit by the pitcher to make it to first base. Austin Kearns was the next man in and he was walked by Brett, who showed signs of tiring.
With the first two bases loaded, Francisco Cervelli came in to fill the batting plate with his experience. He orchestrated the second run for the team with a single to the right. Cano ran home safe and left Kearns on third base. Fortunately, for the Yankees
he followed in to the dugout as well when Greg Golson singled to the right.
With three runs on the board, it seemed like the Yankees had a chance to comeback against the Toronto Blue Jays. Unfortunately, that wasn’t to be the case as the hosts proved too strong for the visitors.
The home team added another run in the bottom 7th and the team did it through Wells. A throwing error by Rodriguez got Wells to first base. A wild pitch to Joba Chamberlain got him to second and he later stole the third to put the Yankees under
pressure again. With Vernon waiting on third, Hill slugged a single to the right centre to get the 8th run for the team, on board.
The Yankees, having no good performance in the following innings, were scoreless till the top 9th. Derek Jeter was walked and he moved to the second when Nick Swisher singled to the centre.
The Jays were moving up for the end of the game and they kept their eye on Derek, given his reputation. Mark Teixeira walked in next and he grounded out to first. But the ace batter got Jeter to 3rd base. From there, all it took was for Alex Rodriguez
to ground out to shortstop, which led to Derek’s run. The last brace got Toronto an 8 – 4 win over the New York Yankees.
