Citrus Fruit Theme-Pre-K?

Hello,

Next quarter I will be taking my Internship as I have listed above my theme is Citrus Fruits. I need some websites,stores or some good information where I can find information on this theme. Things that I will be needing include: books, bulletin board set, puppet, pictures, mobiles, manipulatives, puzzles, dramatic play area set up Activites: Health, Safety, and Nutrition, Math, Science, Social Studies,Large Muscle(Gross Motor)-outside, Small Muscle (Fine Motor), Language Arts, Literacy, Art/Woodworking, Music/Movement, Mulitcultural.

hoepfully you're going to be a teacher and teachers do research for their students, so you need to get in the swing of doing your own research b/c you'll need it if you decide to teach.  good luck.

For science- Bring a bunch of different citrus fruits , talk about what's inside- Let them tell you what they think it taste like - what it looks like. Then cut one open look at the inside- let them taste it. It 's fun to compare lemon and oranges . Surprise them with a blood orange ( red in the middle)

where oh where are you? I thought teaching themes was out. and citrus fruits is just too narrow of a focus for 4-5 yr olds. Look into programs like Reggio or project-based approach (Lillian Katz) google search this! Child-centered learning is far better, kids learn more, and I am sure you never will hear a 4 yr old ask to research citrus!

I agree that a simple google search would land you with some good reference points... that's what I did when I started. However... most of the work is sorting through good ideas, ideas that might work if you tweak them, and not so good ideas. So... here are some websites to start from...

no age group is listed but this is a very very specific topic maybe even too difficult for preschoolers to understand----

making juices both individual flavors and combing flavors and use the results to make a graph

make paint or ink prints of various fruits

make paper mache fruit bowls

and as  a previous responder said you need to learn to do your own research not just ask for help (and if you are just now doing this project and it needs to be turned in asap i feel sorry for the children you will be working with)

when i did my internship it took me almost 6 weeks to do all of the lesson planning and then the preparation for the activities

Making Bird Feeders

Materials:

1/2 of an empty orange or grapefruit rind

bird seed

peanut butter

string



Procedure:

Take the rind of the orange or grapefruit and punch one hole in each side of it. Then take some bird seed and mix it with peanut butter. Put that mixture into the rind. Put string through the holes in the rind, and hang from a tree branch to see some birds come your way!

Have children observe birds and note differences between different types of birds.

Orange & Lemon Ice Cream Bowls

Materials:

1 orange per child

melon ballers

Ice Cream(I use lemon sherbert for the affect)



Use a melon baller (or a small spoon will also work) and carve out all of the orange from its peel. Scoop in Lemon Sherbert. Freeze until ready to serve.

Dramatic Play Area:  Set up a lemonade stand.  Put play money in a register and encourage them to count the money.  Have aprons to wear and cups, pitchers, etc.  It would be great if you could do it outside so that they could mix "concoctions" with water and serve it.  

Math:  Count real lemons, oranges, limes, and grapefruits.

Make Key-Lime Pie and talk with the kids about where key limes come from (Florida) and how they are different from other limes.

Have a citrus toss.  Get a bunch of different fruit and divide children into pairs.  Have them toss a fruit back and forth, taking one step back each time a successful catch is made.
