City Wolf doing well under trainer Reade Baker as he won his third race in a row, the Durham Cup at Woodbine
The 3-year-old Canadian champion and the 2009 Queen’s Plate winner couldn’t make a huge impact in the Grade 3, $144,589 Durham Cup at Woodbine on 2 October, 2011, but extending his hot streak, City Wolf shook loose of his rivals to win the Durham Cup.
The 4-year-old Reade Baker trained colt, City Wolf was making his stakes debut after breaking his maiden in his 6th attempt at Woodbine and not looking back since then and landing back to back races.
City Wolf continues to impress trainer Reade Baker, who joined his barn in February from Todd Pletcher, and has truly shined under his supervision.
It was a comfortable win for the son of Giant’s Causeway, and his jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson who broke well and got down to tracking business at mid pack.
He was held off the pace, which was new for the colt under Reade Baker, and worked for him as the pair tracked Don Cavallo, the 7 to 5 favourite set the pace in the beginning of the race.
Don Cavallo went through slight quarter mile fractions of 25.23 seconds, 49.84 seconds for the half mile marker and 1 minute and 13.97 seconds for the six furlongs in the 1 1/8 mile race on Poly Track.
City Wolf challenged Don Cavallo out of the final turn, and stealing the lead easily as he spurted home powerfully to hit the wire and cover the distance in good time of 1 minute and 50.38 seconds.
James Street who wasn’t threatening at all in third, finished second ahead of Stately Victory who finished third in the field of five, while the pace setter Don Cavallo after being first for the most of the race wilted and finished last.
City Wolf was the best and the sharpest runner out there by a country mile, and the field of five didn’t challenge the colt that much to feel threatened, as he was slow up front and just shook loose to get the desired result.
City Wolf improved his career record to 4 win and finishing second and third once, with the earnings of $207,140.
