Question:

City bicycle for getting around? what is the best priced one?

I want to ask my parents for a bike for my bday (I'll be 17). I want a trendy, urban looking bike, not a mountain bike (basically, I want a bicycle that is cute and will get me around once I'm in college). However, I am nervous that many bikes are expensive (like Trek's "Lime" which was almost 600 dollars!!).

If I could have any references from you guys about less expensive bikes that are still trendy and practical, I would really appreciate it!!

  1. Look, if you're going to ride (especially doing any commuting), get a functional bike. Leave "trendy" for the posers. Go to a bike shop (NOT Wally World or any other department store...the sell c**p). Get a decent (read: brand name) hybrid. Front suspension is a plus. Rear cargo rack is essential. A comfortable saddle (I ride a Brooks B66 Champion, but it's like 80 bucks...it all depends on how much you like your buns). The guys at your LBS will fit you, too. Learning a little maintenace will help...especially when you're stuck on the side of the road with a flat.

  2. Just goto a big bike shop - you may have to go to a gigger city.  Look around.  You can easiloy find one just right and the right color too in person for 300.
