City of Syracuse may undertake Off-Track Betting without the support of Onondaga County
It has recently been made known from the office of the mayor of the city of Syracuse that that it may look into working with a company offering off-track betting in the event the lawmakers of the Onondaga County do not allow it to become a reality.
“It is something the city would consider doing and is looking into it,” said Lindsay McCluskey, spokeswoman for Mayor Stephanie Miner.
This is something that would be out of the ordinary as by state law, the cities are not allow to take such an undertaking. It is only possible if the counties of the cities are interested and a part of the venture, which does not hold to be true in this
case.
More specifically, it is not legal for the cities to operate saloons in which betting is done unless the counties in which they are located are a part of an off track betting company which operates at the regional level.
However, this does not seem as a huge hurdle to John Signor, who is the president as well as the CEO of Capital District Regional Off-Track Betting Corp. Signor is of the opinion that the matter should not be made so complicated as all that needs to be done
to make all the stakeholders happy is to legalize the case of the city of Syracuse. This of course can only be done if the city requests the state to do so by passing a law.
In order to make his decision a reality, Signor has already began working on the matter. He is currently in discussion with the lawmakers of the state regarding the plan to let the city of Syracuse operate off track betting saloons irrespective of the county.
The advantage that the city of Syracuse would have if the proposal becomes a reality would be majorly financial. As the county would not be involved in any sense, it would not be able to lay claims on the revenue generated by the operations.
It is not yet certain what turn would events take regarding the issue but the proponents of the plan are hopeful for something positive.
