Question:

Civics education in the US is appalling...?

I have always known that public schools in the US do not adequately teach civics, but never has that point been driven home more than by people in these forums. I know that NCLB screwed us even more than we were already screwed in education but you would think educators in this country would at least teach what the Founding Fathers said about the establishment of this country. I just want to know how many people actually had a civics class, when you had it (academic and calendar years), and if you ever learned what the Treaty of Tripoli was? If you would please also include if you went to public, private, or home schooling that would be great. I just really want to know how badly this country is screwed for the future.

  1. Dear Nikki,

This country (USA) is totally lost and has a very grim future.  Half the people think that the "Georgia" in the news has Atlanta as the capital!!

Geography is a lost art and civics as we knew it is "history".

I have become apolitical, and feel glad that in my 61st year I will have maybe 2 decades left to watch the downfall of my adopted nation.  Sigh.

Please continue to write well, (as your qu shows) and home educate your kids (as I have mine).  I have believed that, if we did nothing but color in the lines and chat, my 5 kids would be better educated than the govt school kids.
