Civil Engineering Technology A. S. Degree?

Let me give you a little background and hopefully you will get a good idea of what I am going for.

Background:

I was an infantryman for a 5 year in the Army straight out of high school. While I was in the Army I was stupid enough not to take any college. So now I am 24 and have 1 year of community college under my belt.

Question:

Is a A.S. in CE a good degree to get? I do understand that I will not make as much as as an Engineer with a B.S. degree (which I hope to work for in the future). What I am hoping for is to bring home at least $2,000 a month after taxes (the amount I was able to survive on in the Army). Is this feasible? What jobs would you suggest with this degree that would help me achieve this?

You should make that easily.  

Some types of jobs you could do are surveying, cad drafting and design, inspection, grade hop or even field engineering.
