  1. very possible -- i work a pipe line once where we work six tens with 2 hours of wind shield time so it was 72 hours a week -- of course this was a detailed contract job!!!

  2. Professionals such as engineers may very well work 80 hours per week.  Work done by a civil engineer is often on a contracted bases.  A firm or individual will  be hired to complete a particular job.  Contracts have deadlines, so you will have to work however many hours are required to complete job on time.  Government employees will normally not work as many hours as independents, but they don't get paid as much either.

This type of occupation is not necessarily a 9 to 5 job.  I now a computer programmer who helped set up cell phone networks in South America.  He worked up to 100 hours per week.

  3. It is possible at times when deadlines have to be met. But it is not usual.

I am an electronics engineer and I work 40 hours a week normally but when we are off to a trade show, I will work straight through weekends then. And I take work home with me, averaging another 20 hours a week in the evenings, but I have demanded and receive extra money for this.

  4. Depends on the work that you over see getting done.  just remember that pay goes with responsibility most of the time.
