The quote from George Orwell's "1984" about a future totalitarian government in Britain stated that if you controlled the present you controlled how the past was recorded and hence you could control how people perceived the present. Further that by changing the record of the past you could convince people that the present government never made mistakes, this level of control allows you to control the future.
