  1. Like stated above, the Battle of Sharpsburg (otherwise known as Antietam) allowed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Both sides had heavy casualties. More Americans died on September 17, 1862, than on any other day in the nation's military history, including World War II's D-Day. It should have been a major Union victory but General McClellan was way too hesitant to capitalize on situations. It was enough to discourage the French and British from helping the Confederacy. McClellan was relieved of command and the Union Army of the Potomac would see a couple more crappy commanders before it found one that could defeat Lee.
