personally I know my dad as a young teenager, joined was able to get away from a bad situation and still send home enough money each month to support his sisters.

The ccc was part of President Roosevelt's NRA or National Recovery Act.

It was a depression era tool to put jobless men to work.

The CCC built roads and bridges among other things.

In my home town they laid stone work and planted trees in the national park.

The CCC ended about the time WW 2 began because there was no longer a need for it.

We had to bring women into the workforce to fill vital positions during the war.

The CCC was created in the 1930s as an answer to the Great Depression as part of the Public Works Association.  It was basically created to give a large number of unemployed men something to do with themselves.  Unlike some boondoggles the government created, however, the CCC was not entirely useless because they helped improve the national parks system and beautify recreational areas.

Beginning with WWII, the CCC was not really necessary anymore (as far as providing employment for the American people).  Certainly by the 1950s, the CCC was consisdered obsolete and disbanded soon after.

In the 1990s, the CCC was resurrected on a small scale.  It is currently a government program where high school graduates can join up to go work in the national park system basically doing maintenance (building bridges, taking care of structures, and other work).  It is likely that we would not be able to enjoy these parks if the CCC had not made them accessible and beautiful.
