Civilization 2. I'm having a hard time...?

I bought the game civilization 2 and I can hardly figure out how to play it. I don't know how to build a city, make settlers, and many other things. All I know how to do is raise the taxes, move the people around, and make war. I don't know how to build ships or anything.... Your help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks
