I live with my mum and she has house insurance that covers my laptop. A little while ago my laptop dropped off the sofa and one of the hinges cracked. I dropped it again today and its completly broken. The screen wont stay up by itself and i have to lean it against something. Can my mum claim for it? If she does do her payments go up?And by how much?

  1. Your mom can claim it, whether it is covered or not would depend on her policy. Unfortunately no one here has access to her policy so no one here has access to her policy so no one can say for sure.

Second how much would it cost to repair the laptop? Since there are two separate incidents the deductible would apply twice. Is the cost of repairs less than twice the deductible (once again no one here has access to your mom's policy so no one knows what her deductible is)? If it is then it is not worth placing the claim as there will be no payout. Is it slightly more than twice the deductible? If so then once again it may not be worth placing a claim.

Third does she currently have a discount for no claims? If she does she might lose this discount, which can range from 10-25%. If she has prior claims this could be the claim that broke the camel's back, and the company may choose to not renew the policy.

The best advice is to contact your mom's broker/agent and discuss these points with them prior to making the claim.

  2. Yes you can claim. remember to check how much the excess on the policy ,is because they take that off. The insurance will go up but not by much.

  3. In the US -- this is not a covered loss.

Contents coverage is named peril. So in order for it to be covered it has to be one of the perils named in the policy. Perils include things like - lighting, hail, wind, fire....etc. You dropping something (be it a lap top or a flat screen tv) will not fall under any of the named perils.

  4. Insurance covers for specific perils so you will have to verify on your mums policy whether it is covered for simply dropping the laptop. Usually a $500 deductible. You'd better check her policy.

  5. yes u can claim and yes your premiums will increase next year!
