I just bought a new car and I was told I could save my receipts for gas and use them for my year end taxes since I have to pay fro gas to drive to work. Can I claim my new car too? I live in Ontario Canada.

  1. You've been misinformed. The cost of getting yourself to and from work is never deductible on your Canadian return. The General Income Tax Guide explicitly says this under Line 229 in the Note.

the only way the cost of your gasoline and the cost of your car would be deductible, would be if you need your car in order to do your job. The best example would be if you went to work, and then your employer sent you out on sales calls.

  2. To be clear:  automobile expenses are deductible as to the amount of mileage used for work.  This does NOT include any mileage driving to and from work, and does not include any mileage for which you have been reimbursed.

In order to claim automobile expenses, you would have to keep a detailed log of each mile driven, indicating which are work related and which are personal.

  3. unless your using your car FOR work you cant claim anything. and if you are using your car for work you can only claim the gas you used for work and that's only if they don't reimburse you for it like pay you mileage!!!
