How do I do it? I have been on the Inland Revenue website, and it just confuses me. I have my P45 for the year, I just need to know what I need to apply for, or what to fill in online to claim my tax back please?

  1. On the P45, there is a tax office reference.  Phone HMRC, quote the reference and say you've overpaid and want to claim a refund.  They'll send you a form.

  2. If you have a form P45, I assume you weren't working for the full tax year 6th April to 5th April. HMRC will need to know what you were doing for the rest of the tax year, whilst you were not working.

Download form P91 from www.hmrc/p91, complete for full year, send to tax office with form P45, ask for computation and refund. You can't do it online.

Re other answers, there's no specific refund claim form in these circumstances, and although HMRC may send you refund automatically, that won't happen until the winter.

  3. mine automatically gets sent to me by cheque, i have to do nothing
