Claiming kid on taxes?

My son is 17 and worked a short period of the year so he will i assume have to file taxes like the rest of us...but my question is this..if he files taxes for his little bit of income and since he lives with me and is under 18 can i file him on my taxes or no since hes filing??

  1. As long as you provided over half his support, he lived with your over half the year then you can claim him on your tax return.  

    Visit the IRS web site at www.irs.gov and look at Publication 17 for the 5 dependent tests.  You will see that his age is only a factor for the income test.

  2. Yes you can still claim him unless he's providing over half of his own support, and it doesn't sound like he is.

    He's too old for you to get the child tax credit for him, though

  3. You don't include his income on your return.  If you provided his support, you can claim an exemption for him.
